A FIVE-STEP GAME PLAN TO REVITALIZE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE WHEN IN A SLUMP OR JUST NEEDING A CHANGE.

A FIVE-STEP GAME PLAN TO REVITALIZE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE WHEN IN A SLUMP OR JUST NEEDING A CHANGE.

I like to think we have all occasionally had terrible fashion days. Days when our fashion sense and personal preferences were utterly out of control. These are the moments when every wardrobe choice is met with a heavy sigh of resignation, as nothing seems to fit or pair well. With ‘nothing’ fine and dandy to cover up, my usual go-to phrase is ‘this will do’ today because it has to.

Personal style, however, is a quirky concept subject to chop and change. So, rather than wallow in the frustrations of a bad fashion day, consider this a call to action in redefining your personal style.

Although it is easier said than done, the path to redefining your personalized style is paved with sacrifice and compromise. To usher you into this venture, we have collated five of the most viable action plans guaranteed to put you back at the top of your fashion game.

1. Make Space in Your Wardrobe.

To get your foot in the door, consider clearing your wardrobe. An out with the old mentality ensures plenty of room for the new.

Most of us (me included) have a problem letting go of clothes. This means our closets are constantly stuffed with clothes we haven’t worn or touched in years. And the few times I tried the clean-up process, I ended up restoring the same old pieces on account that I would modify them to my style or find something better to pair them with.

So, to ensure you never get into a clean-up rut, make it a firm rule that only items you have won in the last six months make it back.

Make a point to part with anything you feel no longer represents your style and anything that no longer fits you. Then let go of any pieces that are no longer comfortable for you or that piece that got a foul and indelible stain.

You will also likely find a piece you loved and kept for when you grow bigger, as it was a few measures above your regular size. Let.It.Go! Essentially, anything you cannot rock in the current moment or anything you wouldn’t buy today has to go.

Having established that letting go can be challenging, I wouldn’t recommend throwing out the rejected pile. Instead, find a local charity or shelter and donate the worthy pieces. Such an act of kindness is bound to soften the blow of loss.

2. Look for Inspiration.

After weeding out items that no longer compliment your style or simply don’t meet your new and advanced standards, consider looking for inspiration for what now serves your personal style.

How do you find inspiration?

In the age of information, finding inspiration is ridiculously easy. A simple search through the internet and especially style magazines and websites like this are guaranteed to feed you information on alternative, trendy, and modern styles you can adopt into your personal style.

Social media proves to be an effective place to start. From Instagram, Pinterest, and even media platforms like TikTok, with thousands if not millions of diverse style ambassadors, you are bound to get one or two that resonate with your style.

Although online sources are effective in reminding us what we love and what we never want to be caught dead in, they are not the only source of personalized style inspiration. A casual walk around your local area can spark style creativity if you meet people in stunning and unexpected styles.

3. Introduce New Brands in Your Style.

Loyalty, although well intended, can sometimes be a limiting factor in fashion and style. Just because a specific brand has catered to your sense of style in the past does not mean that only they can.

Although it’s easy to only buy from brands we are vastly familiar with, sometimes getting out of our comfort zone introduces us to a world of new inconceivable possibilities.

In truth, how one brand uses layers, fabrics, dimensions, cuts, shapes, and drape effects can be significantly different from another. This ensures that even if you have two pants in the same size but from two other brands, they all accentuate your features in an appropriate but distinct form.

4. Create a Uniform Approach.

The idea is that once you have found an ideal style for yourself, take a moment and create an outfit you are comfortable wearing every day. And no, this does not mean you buy everything in the same shade.

Simply put, create several variations of your desired style that makes you happy with one rule to follow, i.e., that it makes your everyday outfit crisp, comfortable, and a personal brand flag.

5. Aim to Perfect One Thing Every Week.

Progression is the rule of the game.

In as much as the concept of introducing a revitalized personal style is exciting, consider gradually unravelling your new layers. The consensus is that feeling and looking good should go hand in hand. A sudden new look from top to bottom on a random Monday will likely have you feeling like a stranger to yourself. So instead, consider introducing your unique and evolved style in phases.
